18th & 19th October 2013 at the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich China Culture Connect in association with Royal Museums Greenwich<br/>

Introduction

The 4th Heritage Conference: Asiatic Traditional Painting, Its History and Conservation is organised to promote academic understanding of the history of Eastern Asia pictorial art and the conservation work related to this area.

Asiatic pictorial art, especially Chinese painting and calligraphy, has long been an important component of collections worldwide, yet this heritage is heavily reliant upon conservation and the consequent understanding of historical research, materials, painting techniques and repairing methods.

This year’s conference includes talks from art historian, scientists and conservation specialists from Asia, Europe and America covering a range of topics including rarely read subject: traditional ‘Pengbi Hu Shi’- wall painting and paper decoration in Chinese royal palaces,  long lost Korean painting conservation methods and the history and conservation of Japanese folded screen .

Speakers will discuss paintings and the communication between China, Korea and Japan over the centuries. They will explore the influence of different traditions on each another and how local styles of decoration and conservation techniques evolved, giving technical demonstrations and bringing new discoveries and approaches to the field of Asiatic painting and its conservation.

Highlights include

  •  Large-scale pictorial art conservation - Qing Dynasty Chinese export wallpaper (National Trust) and wallpaper and  mural painting in imperial buildings (Yi He Yuan Summer Palace, China), western and eastern approaches to conservation and preservation
  • The diversity of Chinese, Korean and Japanese pictorial art
  • Scientific researches on pigment, consolidant and adhesive and types of traditional paper
  • The diversity of Chinese traditional paintings from antiquity to modern time
  • A comparison of painting lining, mounting and conservation methods: research and technical demonstrations

The conference is essential for people who care for or study Asiatic pictorial art. We want to thank for the National Maritime Museum for its partnership and to Tru Vue for its continuing support in this annual educational programme.

The Chinese Heritage series is organised by China Culture Connect a pioneer in promoting art heritage conservation and museum management. Through education programmes, publications, exhibitions and conferences it actively contributes to cultural communication between China, Europe and America.CCC logo 4

CCC logo 4
