Allyson McDermott heads her own practice specialising in the Conservation of the Historic Interior, which she established in 1980.

Whilst continuing as a practising conservator, Allyson became Senior Lecturer in Conservation at Northumbria University, was appointed Sotheby's Advisor on Conservation and subsequently became Advisor to the National Trust. She is a past Chairman of the UKIC Historic Interiors Section and has been a Trustee of Icon.

She is currently undertaking Research into the use of Chinese Wallpapers at the V&A.
